What you will need to make this hat:
Size 7 double pointed or straight needles
cable needle
scissors or snips
tapestry needle for seaming
Stitches and abbreviations used are:
(co) cast on
(k) knit
(p) purl
(dpn) double pointed needle
(ss) slip stitch
(ws) wrong side
(rs) right side
(bo) bind off
To begin
co 30 sts
Row 1 - ribbing K1, *k2, p2, repeat from * across to last 3 sts, p2, p1
Continue to work ribbing for 2", (approx) 12 rows.
Cable pattern rows
Rows 1, 3, 5 (ws) p 10, place st marker, k2, p6, k2, place marker, p10
Rows 2 & 4: k 10, p2, k6, p2, k 10
Row 6: k 10, p 2, sl next 3 sts onto dpn or cable needle and cable back, k3, then k 3 from dpn, p2, k 10

Continue working pattern rows until piece measures 8" from co edge. Work rows 1 through 5 of pattern.
Begin ending ribbing as follows,
P1, *p2, k 2, repeat from * across to last 3 sts, k1, k2
Continue to work ribbing for another 10 rows, bind off, seam sides.

P1, *p2, k 2, repeat from * across to last 3 sts, k1, k2
