Cheryl: Cylinda, how did you get started working with thread? Cylinda ~ Hi Cheryl, thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed. I actually learned to crochet using thread and a small steel hook (size 8 USA - 1.50 mm) back in 1977. At the time, my hubby and I were stationed in Hawaii (Navy), and two of my neighbors knew how to crochet. That peaked my interest. Then while hubby was deployed over to the Philippines, I went home (California) with our two small children for Christmas. While there, my mom taught me to crochet using that vintage steel hook and crochet thread. I was hooked - punned intended. That steel hook, by the way, was given to my mom by a neighbor when she taught my mom to crochet. The hook has to be about 50-60 years old. It's my favorite and I love this size for designing - hence why most of my thread designs are worked using this size. Cheryl: Who taught you how to crochet? Cylinda ~ My Mom! Cylinda has told me that she is left handed but learned to crochet right handed. I am also a leftie, I do crochet with my left hand but, as a child my maternal grandmother taught me to knit. She was right handed and couldn't find anyone to teach me left handed so I had to learn with my right hand. I knit with my right hand and crochet with my left!! Cheryl: What would you recommend for beginners that want to work with thread? Cylinda ~ Start with maybe a larger size hook like a size 0 or 1 and a size 3 thread; especially if you've been working with yarn. Use a handle (how you hold your hook) that is comfortable for you. In my case, I'm left-handed but learned to crochet right-handed since my mom is right-handed. I ended up using the knife hold over the pencil hold. It's just a matter of finding a position that is most comfortable. Cheryl: Do you have any "Threadie" tips or tricks to share with our readers?
