©Home made hats by Cheryl April 28, 2015 A free hat pattern for you! This adorable summer hat is done in shell stitch with a lovely flower embellishment. The flower is not my creation and I have included the link to make it. With or without the flower this cotton hat is perfect for the beach or any outdoor activity. You can make one for your toddler and a matching one for yourself all with the same pattern, just a change of hook size and you are good to go! Child’s hat will fit 2-3 years. Materials Girls Hat I/5.5 mm hook (flat circle measurement 4.5 to 4.75 inches at end of round 5) Womens Hat J/6 mm hook (flat circle measurement 6 - 6.25 inches at end of round 5) Peaches and Creme Cotton Tapestry Needle Buttons optional for center of flower ~ I used a french knot with a strand of each color. Girls Main Color (MC) 2.5 oz Fresh Lilac Contrast Color (CC) Small Amount Black Currant Womens Main Color 2.5 oz Ecru Contrast Color Burgundy Technique Regular Crochet Stitches Used Chain - ch Magic Ring - mr Shell - sh To make shell - 5 dc in stitch indicated, shell made Double Crochet - dc Half Double Crochet - hdc Single Crochet - sc Slip Stitch - ss If you do not know the magic ring method you can learn it here. How to crochet magic circle or finger wrap by Yarn Obsession Or you can chain 3 and make 12 dc in 3rd chain from hook Pattern Magic Ring, ch 3, 12 dc in ring, join with ss in 1st dc (12 dc) Round 2 - ch 2, 2 dc in ea st around. Join with ss in 1st dc (24 dc) Round 3 - ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, *dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat from * around. (36 dc) Round 4 - ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, *dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat from * around (48 dc) Round 5 - ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, dc in next 3, 2 dc in next around. (60 dc) Round 6 - ch 3 (counts a 1st dc) 4 dc in same sp as join, *sk 2 st, sc in next st, sk 2 st, sh in next stitch, repeat from * around (10 sh, 10 sc) join with ss in 1st dc Round 7 - ss over 1 stitch, ch 1, sc in same st , *skip 2 stitches, shell in sc of previous round, skip 2, sc in center of sh of previous round, repeat from * around. Rounds 8 through 12, repeat rounds 6 & 7 ( or until desired length). At end of round 12 join contrast color, continue with pattern for one more round. Round 14 ~change to mc, join with ss, hdc in same stitch as join and in ea stitch around. Round 15 ~ join with ss, 2 sc in same stitch as join and in ea stitch around. Join with ss to first hdc Round 16 - ch 1, sc in ea stitch around (for womens hat continue for one more round on brim before changing to cc). Change to contrast color for final round on brim. Round 17 - ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, *ch 1, skip 1, sc in next repeat from * around; fasten off. I can't wait to make some of these for our hospital gift shop. They will be very popular! Thanks so much for sharing. Since I supply all my own yarn I try not to have to buy patterns for the donations if possible.
