?What is Crochet??

Crochet is the process of creating fabric from yarn, thread or strands of material with a hook.  Crochet comes from the french word meaning hook .  There are many uses for crochet.  You can create blankets, clothing, accessories, and a wide variety of other items from crochet.  Here is a fun fact, weaving and knitting can be done by a machine, the are of crochet can only be done by hand!!

All of my research shows that the earliest written reference to crochet comes from The Memoirs of a Highland Lady  by Lady Elizabeth Grants. (1897-1930) There it is referred to as slip stitch crochet or shepherds knitting.    There is not much evidence of crochet until it became popular in 19th century Europe.   It is theorized that crochet evolved from traditional practices in Iran, South America or China.     I found this information on-line at Wikipedia, you can read more here.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crochet.  

There are many different styles of crochet, I will touch on each of them as I continue with this blog.  I will also be touching on the different stitches of crochet.  Chaining, single crochet and double crochet being the most widely used stitches.  To get started crocheting you need a couple basic items, a hook, some yarn, a tapestry needle to weave your ends in and a pair of snips to trim you loose ends.
